Elbert came to Traverse City, Michigan with his parents in 1873. He managed the Ellis Apple Orchards on the northern tip of the old Mission Peninsula until his father's financial disaster of 1897. He moved to Traverse City where he owned and operated the Hurry Back Bar, the Old Stag Saloon, and the Ellis Rooming Apartments.
