Misc. Notes
Sources & Information:

Item 1.On 26 July 1788 a Joseph Ellis of Greenfield, Mass. purchased property in Montague, Mass. from William Searle. On the same date a Joseph Allis, also of Greenfield, purchased adjacent property in Montague from this William Searle. It is thought that this was the same man and that the recording clerk was careless in spelling the Ellis name. This Joseph Ellis is believed to be the son of Judah Ellis as both were living in Greenfield in 1788. Just when Judah and Joseph moved from Harwich to Greenfield and how many members of the family accompanied them is not known. It is felt that they may have lived in Lyme, Conn. for a while before moving on to Greenfield.

Item 2.Joseph Ellis is listed in the 1790 census as the head of a Montague family of two males over 16, three under 16 and four females. In the 1800 census Joseph Ellis is listed as the head of a Fletcher, Vermont family of two males between 10 and 16, one male over 45, one female under 10 and one female between 10 and 16. At this time his son Andrew was living in Fairfax, six miles to the west and his daughter, Bethia, now married to Theodore Melvin, was living in Cambridge, Vermont, four miles to the south. On 25 April 1807 Joseph Ellis was listed as a member of the Congregational Church of Fletcher. On 10 August 1808 Joseph Ellis and Andrew Ellis, now both of Colchester, exchanged deeds, apparently an effort on Andrew's part to extricate his father from financial difficulties. Both Joseph and Bethia, his wife, are buried in the Munson Cemetery in Colchester, VT.
